WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS

Choosing and styling Outfits for Your Family Session

Choosing what to wear might feel tricky, but it doesn’t have to be! The key to beautiful, lasting photos is simple: comfort, coordination, and timeless textures. When you feel comfortable in your clothes, your family connection shines through naturally—and that’s exactly what I want to capture.

Why a timeless colour palette?

Choosing a colour palette is the first step to creating photos that stay beautiful and relevant for years. Timeless colours don’t compete with your family’s natural connection—they enhance it.

Soft neutrals like warm creams, gentle greys, muted greens, and earthy tones create a calm, inviting atmosphere that blends effortlessly into any home. These shades add depth and warmth without overpowering the moment. When selecting your palette, choose colours you love—not just for now, but for your walls and albums decades from now. Avoid bright or trendy colours that may date your photos.

Starting with a timeless palette ensures your photos feel elegant and natural—ready to be treasured for a lifetime.

Soft fabrics, breathable materials, and clothes that allow everyone to move and relax freely will help you feel at ease. Avoid anything too tight, itchy, or stiff. Your little ones will thank you, and those genuine moments will come through effortlessly in every image.

Coordinating the Family

You don’t need to match head-to-toe! Instead, think about coordinating colours and tones that complement each other. Pick 3 to 4 colours that work well together—soft neutrals, earthy tones, or gentle pastels are perfect choices that blend beautifully in any home. Avoid busy patterns or logos that can distract from your family’s connection.

Here are some palettes that work well for both newborn and family sessions:

→ Warm Neutrals: cream, beige, oatmeal, taupe

→ Gentle Earth Tones: olive, terracotta, mustard, muted brown

→ Soft Pastels: dusty rose, powder blue, sage, lavender grey

→ Cool Neutrals: light grey, charcoal, navy, icy blue

Embrace Textures

If you are all in the same or similar colours, think about adding texture, it adds subtle depth and warmth to your photos. Think cozy knits, delicate lace, soft cotton, or natural linens. These tactile details catch the light and create images that feel rich, inviting, and full of life. Don't overthink it, if you need a hand, I'm an email away.

FAQ

SHOULD WE WEAR SHOES?

For in-home sessions, barefoot or soft, neutral slippers are ideal—they keep the feel relaxed and natural. For outdoor sessions, simple shoes that coordinate with your outfits work best. Avoid bright colours or heavy sneakers unless they suit the tone of your session (muddy play welcome!). Neutral sandals, boots, or barefoot on grass or sand all photograph beautifully.

WHAT ABOUT ACCESSORIES?

Keep accessories minimal, natural, and meaningful. Soft fabrics, a simple necklace, or a sentimental item can add a personal touch. Avoid anything overly bright, noisy, or distracting—especially for little ones. Hair should be gently styled or loosely tied back, and makeup (if you wear it) can be soft and natural to let your connection shine through. Leave the sports watch at home ;)

SHOULD WE BRING OUTFIT CHANGES?

One well-chosen outfit per person is usually all you need. If your child is prone to mess or spit-ups, feel free to bring a backup in similar tones. For outdoor sessions, a simple jacket or layer that blends with your palette can add flexibility and texture. For newborns, soft wraps, onesies, or being in just a nappy under a blanket is perfect.

HOW SHOULD WE DRESS THE KIDS?

Dress them in soft, comfortable clothing that allows movement and play. Stick to your chosen colour palette and avoid cartoon characters, large logos, or super bright tones. Knitwear, linen, and cotton all photograph beautifully. If you're outdoors, layering can help with changing weather and add lovely texture to the images.

WHAT DO NEWBORNS WEAR?

Newborns are sweetest when kept simple. Neutral-coloured onesies, muslin wraps, or a favourite blanket are perfect. You don’t need shoes or accessories—bare little toes and soft skin are more than enough. If you have something special like a family heirloom or gifted item, we can gently incorporate it.

HOW DO WE CHOOSE CLOTHES THAT FEEL LIKE US?

Your session should reflect your family’s personality—not a styled ad. Start with one outfit you love and feel great in, then build around that. Choose soft, coordinating colours and fabrics that make you feel relaxed and confident. Whether you’re cuddled up on the couch or running through fields, comfort and connection always come first.
