Booking a family photography session can feel exciting, and a little nerve-wracking. Maybe your kids are full of energy. Maybe your partner isn't a "photo person." Maybe you've never had professional photos taken before. All of that is completely normal, and you don't need to know what to do.
That's my job.

At Photo by Nancy, sessions are relaxed, natural, and focused on real connection. This isn't about stiff poses or forced smiles. It's about your family, exactly as you are — in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday, or a milestone moment you'll want to remember forever.

Why Natural Family Photography in Adelaide Looks Different

I specialise in documentary-style family photography — capturing families in ways that feel genuine, emotional, and full of life. Every session is designed to highlight your real connection: the laughter, the in-between moments, the things that make your family uniquely yours.

These aren't the kind of images you scroll past. They're the ones that end up framed on your wall and still make you smile ten years later.

Sometimes kids can't sit still and that's ok. We work with it.

What Happens During a Family Photo Session

A session with me feels more like a relaxed walk than a formal photoshoot. Here's what a typical session looks like:

  • We meet at a beautiful Adelaide location chosen to suit your family
  • We walk together, exploring the space naturally
  • Kids are free to run, explore, and play — within view
  • We'll cuddle on a blanket if you've brought one
  • I capture the in-between moments of genuine connection as they happen
  • We'll also get the classic "everyone looking" shot — but the images that usually end up framed are the ones that happen naturally

What to expect on the day
Sessions are typically 1–2 hours. You don't need to arrive camera-ready or have a plan. Just show up as yourselves — I'll guide you through the rest.

How I Work With Kids (Including the Wild Ones)

You don't need perfectly behaved children. Some of the most loved images I've ever taken came from moments parents described as total chaos.

Over more than 11 years photographing Adelaide families, I've worked with toddlers who wouldn't stop moving, shy kids who hid behind mum, and teenagers who arrived absolutely certain they didn't want to be there. Every single one produced beautiful images.

If your child needs a cuddle, a break, or five minutes to inspect a bug on the ground — we go with it. The session bends around your kids, not the other way around.

Tips for Parents — Including Reluctant Partners

If your partner isn't thrilled about photos, don't worry. They don't need to pose or perform. They just need to show up and love their family. Natural conversation, real hugs, and genuine connection are all it takes. Most reluctant partners leave saying the same thing: "That was actually easy."

A few simple things that make a difference on the day:

  • Wear clothing that feels comfortable and like you — nothing too tight or brand new
  • Choose neutral or earthy tones where possible (see the full outfit guide here)
  • Arrive a few minutes early, so the kids can settle into the space
  • Trust that I'll guide you — you won't be left standing there wondering what to do

Why Printed Photos Make All the Difference

After your session, you'll receive a gallery of beautifully edited images. But here's something I believe strongly: photos deserve to be held, displayed, and seen every day — not buried in a camera roll.

Research shows that children who grow up with family photos displayed in their home develop a stronger sense of belonging, self-worth, and confidence. A single framed image on the wall does more than any digital file ever will.

That's why I offer a range of printed artwork designed to suit your home and your family:

Glassless Frames

Clean, modern wall display — and kid-proof.

Wall Art Collections

Wood Mounts

Capture Your Family Story in Adelaide

Time moves quickly. Babies grow. Kids lose front teeth. Teenagers suddenly look like adults. Capturing your family now — beautifully, imperfectly, and honestly — preserves something that cannot be recreated later.

Photo by Nancy serves the Adelaide metro area with no travel fee. Sessions are available for families at all stages — newborns, toddlers, school-age kids, and teenagers included.

FAQ

What happens during a family photography session in Adelaide?

A session with Photo by Nancy is relaxed and unscripted. You'll walk together at a beautiful location, let the kids explore naturally, and I'll capture genuine moments as they happen — cuddles, laughter, chaos and all. Classic posed shots are included, but the most treasured images are almost always the candid ones.

What if my kids won't cooperate during photos?

You don't need perfectly behaved children — and you definitely don't need to apologise for them. Some of the most loved images come from what parents think is chaos. Toddlers, shy kids, and reluctant teenagers all photograph beautifully in a relaxed, child-led session. If they need a break or a cuddle, we go with it.

What if my partner doesn't like having photos taken?

Reluctant partners don't need to pose or perform. They just need to show up and love their family. Natural conversation and real connection are all that's needed — most partners say afterwards it was far easier than they expected

What do I receive after my family photography session?

You'll receive a gallery of professionally edited, high-resolution images delivered via an online gallery. Printed products are also available, including glassless frames, wall art collections, wood mounts, and photo box collections — all Australian made.

Why should I print my family photos?

Digital photos are rarely seen after the first few weeks. Printed images displayed in the home are seen every single day — and research shows they contribute to children's sense of belonging, self-worth, and confidence. Even one framed image can transform a space into a daily reminder of connection and love.
